Fire Records new releases: First up, Josephine Foster & The Victor Herrero Band

UK-based Fire Records is gearing up for an extremely busy fall and winter! The label will be releasing new material by Josephine Foster & The Victor Herrero Band, Giant Sand, Surf City, Snowblink, Bardo Pond, Jad Fair & Duke Garwood, and a career retrospective of ESG. We’ll be giving you the run down on each artist and sharing an MP3 from their respective albums. First up this week is Josephine Foster & The Victor Herrero band.

Federico Garcia Lorca’s popular folk song collection Las Canciones Populares Espanolas was banned under Franco’s dictatorship and today the music survives but marginally within the Spanish sub-conscious. Taking their cue from Lorca and La Argentinita’s infectious 1931 recording of the songs, Josephine Foster and her partner Spanish musician Victor Herrero have arranged the poetically rich collection for their new acoustic band, formed while living in the Grenadine Sierra. Anda Jaleo is the band’s live recording of Las Canciones; a visceral celebration of the persistence of popular anonymous song.

Josephine Foster is a modern American folk singer-songwriter and musician from Colorado. As an adolescent she worked as a funeral and wedding singer, and aspired to become an opera singer. Several years later she abandoned the idea and began to record demos of her songs, resulting in the early recordings There Are Eyes Above (2000), an album of ukulele accompanied songs strongly influenced by Tin Pan Alley, and a short album of children’s songs, Little Life (2001). For several years she worked as a singing teacher in Chicago, recording and performing with a variety of musical acts on the side including Born Heller, a duo with free jazz-bassist Jason Ajemian, and The Childrens Hour a pop band formed with songwriter Andrew Bar.

In 2004 joined by her occasional backing band The Supposed (Brian Goodman on guitar and Rusty Peterson on drums) she released an album of psychedelic rock called All The Leaves Are Gone which has drawn comparison to Patti Smith and Jefferson Airplane. The songs on her first solo studio album Hazel Eyes, I Will Lead You (2005) evoke early American folk and blues forms of the early 20th century. A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing released in 2006, features unorthodox interpretations of 19th century German art-songs. Her third solo album This Coming Gladness was released in 2008.

Josephine Foster and the Victor Herrero Band begin their European tour tomorrow; culminating in a solo stop for Josephine at the Godspeed You! Black Emperor curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in Minehead on December 3rd.

Seth Augustus to Release "To The Pouring Rain" on February 16, 2010

This week Seth Augustus released a second MP3, “Tiny Little Head” from his forthcoming album. After haunting the outer-lands of San Francisco’s music world for the better part of two decades, Seth Augustus has emerged with a fully realized sound and debut CD, To the Pouring Rain (Porto Franco), to be released February 16, 2010. On the album, primitive textures and rhythms, Seth’s sinister-electrified guitar and gravely, bluesy voice mingle with the rhythms of early American folk and jazz, the cadences of carnival sounds and more than a little 60s-era Captain Beefheart. Seth collaborated with mentor Paul Pena (legendary blues player who was the subject of Oscar-nominated Ghengis Blues), studied throat singing and ethnic instrumentation in Tuva, and learned from musicians he met on travels to Mali.

Seth’s label, Porto Franco, was recently profiled in the San Francisco Chronicle. Read the article here.

Balmorhea releases "Bowsprit," the first song from the forthcoming album, Constellations

2010 is going to be a big year for the Austin-based group, Balmorhea. They’re following up their last two critically-acclaimed full-lengths with a new LP, Constellations, which will be out on February 23, 2010 via Western Vinyl. Upon the album’s release, Balmorhea will join the Danish group Efterklang on a North American tour before returning home for a string of shows at SXSW.

Constellations is a solemn meditation on the mystical and metaphysical, often giving the listener a sense of being tossed about on the ocean, at the mercy of a reckless and merciless god. The album ultimately hopes to provide a euphoric release for listeners as they realize that fate relies more upon the teasing whims of the unknown than any design of our own.

Heligoats NPR Song of the Day Screengrab

The Heligoats "Fish Sticks" is NPR Song of the Day

From NPR.com:
“The Heligoats’ Chris Otepka writes songs that are brainy in the best way: clever without straining for cuteness, wry but never smug. Ideas flow out of him in a barrage, which means that a song about science — like “I’m Pretty Sure I Can See Molecules,” by his ludicrously underappreciated former band Troubled Hubble — ultimately unfurls into a knockout commentary on what we’re made of, what our lives mean, and how the two notions intersect.”

Western Vinyl's Slow Six Release New mp3 "The Night You Left New York"

Throughout the last decade, New York’s Slow Six read down its twenty-minute electro-acoustic scores to stunned audiences, re-imagining the classical and rock music the band grew up with in their own image. Now, Slow Six returns to its experimental rock roots with Tomorrow Becomes You (Jan 26, via Western Vinyl), an emotionally unrestrained full-length infused with taught rhythms, unraveling melodies, and detailed ambiances that owe as much to Tortoise and The Dirty Three as Steve Reich and Brian Eno.

In keeping with the Slow Six mantra, this is still music that changes – and changes us -slowly over time. See, for example, the virtuosic, minimalist hocketing in “The Night You Left New York” slowly which slowly gives way to its eruptive guitar-soaked finale.
