CMJ Caught Hints @ Alphaville And Took Some Great Pics!

Local guitar-pop band Hints expelled nothing but friendly, bright vibes in the dimly lit Brooklyn venue, Alphaville, last Thursday evening. Hosting a showcase with other budding Brooklyn acts Strange Names and Tony Castles, the venue’s backroom cultivated rich sounds and chummy impressions. Everyone was eager to discuss how they are connected with one of the bands, promoting a local support grapevine thick enough to cut with a knife.

CMJ Posted a Great Review + Photo Gallery of Tommy Wallach's Release Show At Joe's Pub!

Wallach has a knack for creating compelling musical narratives and marring them to a dexterous performance style enriching the experience. The novelist, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, is finally having his stars align towards abounding success. The latest album We All Looked Up is sure to be the catalyst for his limitless musical trajectory, and a telescope won’t be needed for this cosmic display.

Video Premiere: Guts Club – “Weird Boat”

Guts Club is the moniker of one Lindsey Baker, who started the project as a series of DIY videos set to vaguely morbid, but tongue-in-cheek sore-throat pop. Today we’ve got the premiere of one of those videos for the song Weird Boat. The finger-plucked, very Daniel Johnston-esque track is visualized by grainy, summer camp footage wrapped in shivering esophagal animation.

All this will culminate in the release of Guts Club’s debut LP, The Arm Wrestling Tournament, this February.

Release Week For Megafaun!

This week, Durham N.C. trio and former Justin Vernon bandmates Megafaun released their fourth LP, the self-titled Megafaun. The album was the #3 Most Added record at CMJ this week, and already the reviews are rolling in! Check out some of the initial praise below!

From Pitchfork

“Megafaun have quietly completed the smart, sizable stylistic shift they started on last fall’s Heretofore EP, drawing back on the burly backwoods weirdness of their earlier work while widening their stylistic scope and pushing compositional delicacy to the forefront. And Megafaun may be their most immediately ingratiating, rewarding LP yet” – 7.8

From PopMatters

“No matter how you frame it, Megafaun is a stunning, expansive, and utterly satisfying record. It’s roadworn but hopeful, melodically fascinating, and never misses a step on its wandering, restless path” – 8/10

“With a new self-titled recording that ranges from free jazz to Delta blues, Megafaun proves they can cover all kinds of classic American music.”

Megafaun are in New York for two shows at Mercury Lounge, on September 25 and 26. Details can be found here in The New Yorker.
