Wolverhampton UK born David Newton was the guitarist and songwriter behind C86 popsters & NME front-cover stars turned US alternative/college radio chart-toppers The Mighty Lemon Drops. After the break-up of the Drops in the early 90’s (and following a brief stint with The Blue Aeroplanes) Dave relocated to Los Angeles in 1995 where he turned his garage in Burbank into a recording studio, and since then has produced and engineered more albums than he can recall (inc The Little Ones, The Soft Pack, The Henry Clay People, The Blood Arm, The Happy Hollows, to name but a few).

After spending the 2000’s having fun playing live with friends bands (including a lengthy European tour with Eddie Argos / Dyan Valdes project Everybody Was In The French Resistance…Now), in 2011 Dave released his first ever solo record as David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels, the acclaimed Paint The Town EP, which received enthusiastic reviews, radio exposure (KCRW /KROQ) and TV licensing (inc The CW’s “LA Complex“ / AG Jeans commercial). Since then Dave has mainly concentrated on his production / recording work for other artists, squeezing in the occasional live appearance with his own band of musician pals (including shows opening for Peter Murphy / Mike Watt / Tim Burgess).

So, here we are in 2020. Kicking things off on July 17th is a brand new Thee Mighty Angels single “The Songs That Changed Our Lives” with lead vocals by Dave’s old mate Eddie Argos from Art Brut. The song is a “list” song of Eddie and Dave’s favourite records accompanied by a video including all of said well-worn 7” singles. Following on from the single will be a full length album A Gateway To A Lifetime Of Disappointment, released on August 14th, consisting of ten songs chronicling both the joys and the disappointments of what life throws at us.

David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels continues on from the earlier elements of The Mighty Lemon Drops sound, with a modern contemporary take on the melodic uplifting side of the 80’s post-punk sound.
