Vargas, Kate

Radio Contact: Nelson or Hill
RIYD: Shovels & Rope, Laura Marling, Shakey Graves

True to her Southwestern roots (and her “Outlaw Americana” passion), Kate Vargas’ music “weaves through a riotous brew of folk, blues, (Americana, punk) and rock, delivered by an undeniably unique voice… It’s like the sound of a favorite bourbon come to life: gritty, but with loads of personality to spare.” (The Deli Magazine). Something with a title like Strangeclaw conjures images of something alive, something that may have claws or a sharp edge, something that just may cut an unaware listener. Yet, there’s a raw tenderness that speaks to even the roughest and toughest’s inner child.

The New Mexico native moved to New York in 2011 to kick off her solo music career. Vargas soon landed spots at various music festivals and gigs at national and international venues, including the Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival in Ireland, London’s The Troubadour, Kex in Reykjavik, Iceland, The Mansion on O Street in Washington, DC and New York’s Midtown Live, where Vargas shared the stage with Southern gothic rocker, Lincoln Durham.

“When you hear Kate,” says Justin Remus (Groundsounds), “you don’t forget it. Her smoky, heartfelt vocals make an immediate impression.” Elmore Magazine calls her “a dynamic addition to any musicians-to-watch list.”
She cites a range of influences for her unique sound, including vocal icons, Nina Simone and Tom Waits. Both names are enormous shoes to fill, but Independent Clauses insists, “Vargas delivers… with raspy, soulful, inspired folk full of banjo and danger.”

Perhaps this is why Strangeclaw, Vargas’ most recent album release, has garnered so much attention. “From her sensual and raspy sound, that echoes of Macy Gray, her creative approach to her craft is making those in the music industry stare with wide eyes, while her longtime fans nod knowingly.” (Richie Friedman, Pen’s Eye View) Kate’s abilities, to both throw herself into her songs and connect with the listener, are rare and refreshing. She “connects with the music on an emotional level that will take listeners on a wild ride and back. There is an unlimited amount of potential in this superstar on the rise.” (Kyle Stevens, The Huffington Post)

Since recording in New York’s Mercy Sound Studios (Blondie, Macy Gray, Lauryn Hill) and mastering her songs in London’s Abbey Road Studios (The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Badfinger), Vargas continues to channel a Nina Simone-esque daring and penetrating rawness.

With the release of Strangeclaw, her newest endeavor, Vargas has come of age. She’s met her talent head on and she’s somehow merged her punk rock instincts and her songwriting maturity to become a songwriter to behold. She can be enjoyed next to a sunset campfire lovefest of Shovels and Rope as easily as next to the midnight dark jazz club blues of Tom Waits. Strangeclaw is raw, it’s got chops, and if you are willing to truly listen, it just might cut you.
