Bobby Conn is pleased to present Macaroni, a delicious bowl of cheesy noodles served up for a world of war, riots, greed and revolution. Recorded with Bobby’s crackerjack band The Burglars and mixed by Bobby himself, Macaroni is a chronicle of our times, cheerfully spraying glitter on the chaos that surrounds us. It’s a record for the Occupy generation, or at least for those of us who check in on the protests via Facebook. As always, Bobby bravely battles despair with acid wit and showmanship.
Bobby has equally delighted and annoyed hipsters since first appearing on the Chicago music scene in the mid ‘90s. Blending aggressive showmanship with an omnivorous love of musical genres, from Suicide to Streisand or from The Sweet to Stravinsky, Bobby has often irritated and provoked audiences, but never bored them. From experimental performance art and noise music to superficially “straight” rock Bobby is always subversive. And he subverts himself happily.
Bobby Conn’s lyrics document the continuing absurdities of contemporary Western culture, illustrating and celebrating the convenient hypocrisies that allow us to sleep soundly every night. He developed “The Continuous Ca$h Flow System” in 1995 as a critic of the magical thinking that Americans employ concerning their debt fuelled lifestyles. 15 years later, Bobby’s “Continuous Ca$h Flow” is revealed as the operating principle of the entire financial system. He has accurately described the Armageddon based world view of America’s Christian right since 1996, and tracked its evolution from fringe fanaticism to its current place in the heart of America’s political mainstream. But despite the relevance and prescience of his songwriting, his devotion to total entertainment in glitter and heels has confused as many as he has enlightened.
He continues to collaborate with his wife and musical partner, Monica Boubou. Fully his equal as an entertainer herself (and more than his equal in stature), her electrified violin defines the epic melodic reach of their music. The members of his band, The Burglars, were stolen from the best groups in the Chicago underground today. Drummer Josh Johannpeter has played with Bobby since recording the King For A Day album in 2006 and is currently active in the excellent electro boogie bands Lazer Crystal and Mahjongg. Keyboardist Jon Steinmeier and master bassist Jim “Dallas” Cooper also played on King For A Day and are members of new wave misfits The Detholz! as well working with Mucca Pazza, Daniel Knox, Lovely Little Girls, Baby Dee, and Van Dyke Parks. The Burglars will accompany Bobby and Monica on tours of the USA, Europe and the UK in throughout 2012.
The Songs:
Macaroni: When life gives you a box of dried noodles with a packet of artificial cheese powder, what right have we to complain? May as well eat it and try to keep dreaming. The overstuffed and garish title track; winds up and grinds down in a spritely 2 minutes.
Govt: Democracy is hard when people trust comedians more than politicians, or can’t tell the difference. Democracy is hard when people are fine with war as long as it’s played on an Xbox 360. Booby turns a sorry situation into an extended Rick James inspired, dissonant funk jam with eerie strings and guest soul vocals by Kelly Hogan and Nora O’Connor.
Face Blind: A slice of life from Humboldt Park in Chicago; Bobby sets the overheard drama of his neighbors to a hypnotic, soulful groove, with processed vocals and a fugue breakdown.
The Truth: Starts with snaky, intertwined guitar lines over a beat stolen from Fela and builds to the ultimate challenge: “Dance!”
More Than You Need: Chosen as the single, the lyrics stake out a moderately nihilist philosophy for dealing with modern times over a bouncy piano driven tune that would make Paul McCartney proud. With a burning guitar lead from Mr. Conn.
Cant Stop Th’ War: A song started in 2008, but thankfully still relevant today. Bobby shows how ineffectual, vaguely “liberal” folks have gone about their business while the bombs keep falling. It’s an epic prog-metal journey, imagine Janet Jackson fronting Slayer or Magma working with Christina Aguilera. Starts with an audio montage of the Revolution elsewhere; ends with a charming French nursery rhyme.
GREED: A theme song for the 1%, or at least for all of us suckers trying to join them. Big glam beat, stacked vocal harmonies, searing violin: it’s a classic American nightmare.
Underground Vktm: As kids we all think we’re misfits, misunderstood weirdos. But with the internet, we grow up to realize we all have the same record collection and shop at IKEA. Bobby tells his story from the 80’s through the present with a pizzicato string and organ driven rocker.
