Paperhaus Premieres "Cairo"

There is Paperhaus the band and then Paperhaus the already legendary DIY venue in Washington, DC. Musicians Alex Tebeleff, Eduardo Rivera, and newly added Danny Bentley are Paperhaus the band, and together they host local and touring bands at The Paperhaus. Both entities are rollicking, best experienced in a sweaty group, and are spoken of breathlessly around DC in that urgent sort of manner. Channeling the pop-kraut tendencies of Here We Go Magic and The War On Drugs, Paperhaus seek to change the indie rock landscape by crafting forward-chugging music that gains momentum slowly and relentlessly without ever lulling into tedium. This is CAN re-imagined by the punk ethos; BEAK> amped on caffeine. Suddenly psychedelia is fast and wild again, and the best representation of such a paradigm shift is “Cairo,” the latest six-minute cut taken from Paperhaus’ upcoming album to be released January 2015. Stereogum has it up now along with a list of tour dates that are surely not to be missed.

Dive Index composite

The Return of Dive Index

Dive Index, the collaborative project from electronic composer Will Thomas, break their four year silence on September 30th with Lost In The Pressure, the third full-length effort via Neutral Music. Pairing the subtle electronics of James Blake with post-rock string sections and plundered samples, Lost In The Pressure is a streamlined, tightly focussed record with complex harmonic textures and bare-breasted themes of reflection and inner turmoil. At three albums into his career as Dive Index, Will Thomas’ CV is remarkably impressive. Previous full-lengths boast features from Roger Eno, brother of the inimitable Brian, and Mark Gardener of shoegaze legends Ride, yet on Dive Index’s latest release, Thomas called on the talents of Simone White and Isaiah Gage. White, an LA-based singer/songwriter, has released three albums on Damon Albarn’s Honest Jon’s record label, and Gage, a classically trained cellist, was a member of NYC orchestral pop ensemble La Strada. Together they present an album that defies genre and melds the polar worlds of electro and acoustic music. Stream their two singles, “Rewind Your Patience” and “Counting Umbrellas,” over at My Old Kentucky Blog.

Firework album cover

Catching Up with New God

It’s been quite a week for Baltimore indie-pop duo New God. After releasing their sophomore LP Firework last week, brothers Kenny and Curt Tompkins were featured in NPR Morning Edition where they discussed their unique recording process and the thoughts behind their honest, endearing music. After losing their western Maryland studio space to a family of overactive skunks, the duo stumbled upon an abandoned racquetball court, which provided the ample amount of reverb and acoustics to suit Firework‘s Brian Wilson-tinged pop. During the sessions, the brothers spent nights in a nearby soccer field piecing ideas together that would become their second LP.

Impose is currently streaming the entire LP along with a brief synopsis of the band’s sound. You can read the piece and stream the album here. For a quick snippet from the album, check out Earbuddy’s premiere of Ocean Hum, a stark and carefully worded account of a childhood beach trip built around a gradual musical crescendo stretching the length of the song.

Firework is available now courtesy of Yellow K Records.
