Heligoats Makes NPR's Stephen Thompson's Top 10 Records of 2010!

The voices of NPR have started posting their Top Ten Records of 2010 and we are happy to announce that our very own Heligoats made Stephen Thompson’s Top Ten at #10!

Stephen Thompson is an editor and reviewer for NPR Music. He also curates Song of the Day and appears as a frequent panelist on the podcasts All Songs Considered. Of the Heligoats wonderful Goodness Gracious, he says “The Heligoats’ Chris Otepka doesn’t write songs so much as he stuffs them with ideas until they brim over with imagination.”

Check out the rest of this piece and other NPR notables lists here.

For those of you clamoring for more from The Heligoats, you’re in luck. They have a split 10” coming out in January with their pal, Sam Humans called Live Free/Let Loose. Check out the first single below!

Endings, Beginnings and Eternal Return: Quantum Mechanics and Free Will

The wonderful New York City outfit, The Flying Change, have put together what looks to be a fantastic show for you lucky New Yorkers.

Wednesday night, December 1st, the band will be playing the Rockwood Music Hall (Stage 2). But this not your typical show. With The Flying Change, it never is. The title of the evening is “Endings, Beginnings and Eternal Return: Quantum Mechanics and Free Will.”

They’re giving away free posters (seen here) and Hanukkah gelt! Plus, there will be free course readers on the topic of the show. And that won’t be all. But you’ll probably have to go to find out more. The festivities begin at 9:30 pm.

Go to the show for us and tell us how it was! We’ll be sitting here in Athens, patiently waiting for Flying Change frontman, Sam Jacobs, to finish their new record… Living At The Movies.

MP3 “Rat Trap” (cleared to post)

“With an into similar to DeVotchka’s famous “How It Ends,” the song can only be indie-pop gold. Continuing with a quick drum beat, icy bass chords and a trilling electric guitar, “Rat Trap” sets the mood for an urban evening doused in red wine and 100 of your closest friends.”Magnet Magazine

Giant Sand full band color

Fire Records to release Giant Sand's new album "Blurry Blue Mountain"

2010 marks the 25th anniversary of Valley Of Rain – the debut album by Giant Sand, the ever-shifting alternative rock band overseen by “the Godfather of Alt Country” Howe Gelb. With that in mind, the band are celebrating in the only way they know how: with a flurry of great music. Fire Records is proud to announce November 23 as the US release date for Giant Sand’s newest release, Blurry Blue Mountain.

Inaccurately yet affectionately dubbed the “Godfather of Alt Country” by the British press, Tucson, Arizona-based musician Howe Gelb has remained the sole epicenter and creative force behind the ever-fluid configurations of Giant Sand for over a quarter century. 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of the bands 1985 debut long player Valley Of Rain – the point in which Howes music visions began – and will see the release of the complete works of Giant Sand, Howe Gelb, Arizona Amp and The Bands Of Blacky Ranchette a collection of works that maintains its own genre-defying singularity drawing on the not-so disparate threads of his south western roots, lo-fi, country, jazz, and punk … “Giant Sand is a mood,” explained Howe, as if to simplify the dizzying breadth of his prolific output as an artist.

2010 will also welcome the release of the new Giant Sand record, Blurry Blue Mountain, the follow up to the bands critically acclaimed 2008 album proVISIONS.

“These recordings were done in the space between the waking world and the sleeping one. There exists a point there with a broad landscape that has seldom been loitered in. As with every previous album, none of this was planned. Every record has its own atmosphere. For me they are always a new place to live in and spend some time before moving on. On this album, it happened that every session we were able to record came between work loads that rendered us at that point of sleeping and waking. Like the poppy fields in ‘Wizard Of Oz’, we went in and out of consciousness at various times during recording. This is not a bad thing; nor does it make the record sound like we’re asleep. It has the momentum of that place between sleep and being awake. And in that narrow slip of existence lies a landscape of reason that most of us hurry past in daily lives. This record is planted firmly there.”

“Between the crystal clear focus of your day to day and the luxury of sweet fuzzy sleep, we welcome you to the Blurry Blue Mountain.”

- Howe Gelb
